Zafirlukast

Zafirlukast belongs to the family of leukotriene antagonists, molecules that act against swelling and narrowing of the airways. In particular, zafirkulast prevents the interaction between leukotrienes and its receptors.

What is Zafirlukast?

Zafirlukast is used to prevent asthma symptoms. It can also be used to treat allergic rhinitis and, sometimes, to prevent breathing difficulties during exercise, which may be related to asthma sufferers.

How should Zafirlukast be taken?

Zafirlukast is taken orally in tablet form. Usually, the dosage is two tablets per day, to be taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

Side effects associated with Zafirlukast

The most common adverse effect of zafirlukast is headaches. To this we can add psychological problems that can lead to agitation, aggression, anxiety, irritability, weird dreams, hallucinations, depression, sleep disturbances, restlessness or tremors. The medication can trigger serious symptoms, so make sure to inform your doctor if it causes:

  • shortness of breath or difficulty swallowing
  • pain in the upper right abdomen
  • pain, burning, numbness or tingling in your hands or feet
  • swelling of eyes, face, lips, tongue or throat
  • jaundice
  • nausea
  • loss of appetite
  • loss of energy
  • itching
  • rash
  • hoarseness
  • flu-like symptoms
  • excessive tiredness

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Zafirlukast

Zafirlukast should not be taken to counteract the symptoms of sudden asthma attack and it is also contraindicated during breastfeeding. Moreover, before taking this medication you should talk to your doctor if:

  • You have any allergies to this active substance or other medicines
  • You are taking other medications, especially when it comes to anticoagulants, aspirin-based products, calcium channel blockers, carbamazepine, theophylline, phenytoin, cyclosporine, cisapride, erythromycin or tolbutamide
  • You suffer or have suffered from any liver disease
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
