When should I undergo cataract surgery?

Q: When should I undergo cataract surgery?

A: Treating cataracts depends on the progression of the cataract itself and the visual discomfort associated with it. It is recommended to consult with a doctor, undergo examinations and evaluate the results to determine the extent of the disorder. Most ophthalmologists recommend cataract surgery when cataracts begin compromise vision or interfere with normal daily activities such as reading or driving at night.

Cataract surgery is one of the most performed operations in the world. Many accredited centers perform up to several thousand operations each year. Like all other surgeries, complications can occur, however only at a modest percentage. The surgery is performed under local anesthesia and treated afterwards with eye drops. In a majority of cases, cataract surgery does not involve stitches.
