Toothache

Toothache is often a symptom of decay or infection of the oral cable. However, you should not exclude that it may be a consequence of problems to the jaws or of bruxism, the habit of grinding the teeth at night. Other times it is the result of a problem in another part of the body, such as an earache, sinus infection or, in the presence of other symptoms, a heart problem.

What kind of diseases can be associated with toothache?

The following diseases may be associated with toothaches:

  • Abscess
  • Bruxism
  • Caries
  • Headache
  • Earache
  • Periodontitis
  • Pulpitis
  • Sinusitis

Remember that this is not an exhaustive list and it is highly recommended to consult your doctor, in case of symptom’s persistence.

What is the therapy for toothache?

Taking painkillers can ease the pain if you are pending a visit to the dentist. The best treatment, however, depends on the cause of toothache, you may need to take antibiotics, remove the decay and clog the affected tooth or undergo a root canal and cover the tooth with a crown.

When the cause of the toothache is a bruxism the use of a bite can be useful. Other causes may require specific treatments, for example the use of appropriate medicines in case sinusitis.

When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of toothache?

In case of toothache, it is always good to consult your dentist to identify the cause, especially if the pain is very strong, if it lasts for more than 1 or 2 days and if it is associated with fever.
