Tooth mobility

Mobility of the teeth is a disorder characterized by the fact that one or more teeth, instead of being well-anchored in the jawbone and stable conditions, is in reality mobile.

Under physiological conditions the teeth have a certain degree of mobility measurable and that is about 0.2 millimeters lateral movement and approximately 0.02 millimeters of vertical movement, and is variable for groups of teeth. This kind of mobility may increase in some periods of the life (pregnancy, menstrual period, intake of oral contraceptives).

Besides the physiological mobility also a pathologic mobility excist  that, depending on the severity, is classified in three stages:

  • totally reversible
  • partially reversible
  • irreversible

The root causes of pathologic mobility are gingivitis, periodontitis and trauma.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with tooth mobility?

The following diseases may be associated with mobility of the teeth:

  • Bruxism
  • Gingivitis
  • Menopause
  • Periodontitis

What is the therapy for mobility of the teeth?

To develop a suitable therapy, it is necessary to ask the advice of a specialist in dentistry. Always avoid "do it yourself" remedies and remember that, in case of problems with teeth and gums, it is always good not to overlook or underestimate the first signs of discomfort in the oral cavity: in many cases, early diagnosis can make a difference in terms of recovery.
