Stuffy nose

Stuffy nose is a disorder characterized by constriction of the nasal airway that prevents the subject to breathe through the nose. Although colds are often responsible for this disorder, other diseases may be associated with respiratory allergies such as stuffy nose, nasal polyps, nasal septal deviation, rhinitis and sinusitis.

Depending on what the pathology that underlies it, other symptoms that can accompany a stuffy nose are watery eyes (which can be associated with burning, especially in the case of respiratory allergies), colds, cough, generalized sense of exhaustion, headache, sore throat.

What is the therapy for stuffy nose?

Since the presence of a stuffy nose may have its origin different medical conditions, to identify an appropriate treatment to fix the condition it is necessary to identify the pathology that underlies it.

There are several drug treatments that can provide relief (always with a doctor first):

  • use of analgesics in case of pain in the head
  • cough syrups to need
  • antihistamines in case of respiratory allergies

As to the vasoconstrictor, the use is indicated for only a few days of treatment (closely monitored by your doctor)

When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of stuffy nose?

If the noise does not seem to regress in a few days and in the case of already diagnosed diseases (see list of associated diseases).
