Sterculia

Sterculia is used to treat constipation, especially during pregnancy.

What is Sterculia?

Sterculia is a dietary fibre of plant origin. It increases stool volume and consequently exerts a laxative effect.

How should Sterculia be taken?

Sterculia is administered orally, typically 1 or 2 times a day after meals.

Side effects associated with Sterculia

Among the possible side effects of Sterculia include the following:

  • Meteorism
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Intestinal obstructions
  • Accumulation of dry feces
  • Feeling of heaviness in the gut

It is important to contact a physician immediately in the event of prolonged constipation.

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Sterculia

It is advised to take Sterculia just before bedtime.

Before starting treatment with Sterculia, it is important to tell your doctor if:

  • You have any allergies to the active substance, its excipients or any other drugs (particularly laxatives) or food

  • You are suffering (or have suffered) from ulcerative colitis, difficulty swallowing, bowel obstruction, intestinal atony or large masses of dried feces in the gut

  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding

It is also important to inform physicians, surgeons and dentists of any ongoing treatment with sterculia.
