Skin discoloration (Patches of skin)

Discoloration of the skin, commonly called "patches of skin", is a condition in which areas of skin are lighter or darker than the rest of the skin. The cause can be irritation, inflammation, and solar burns, repeated infections by fungi, bacteria or reactions autoimmune.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with skin discoloration?

The following diseases may be associated with skin discoloration are:

  • Acne
  • Contact allergy
  • Lichen planus
  • Addison's disease
  • Scleroderma
  • Sepsis
  • Tinea versicolor

Remember that this is not an exhaustive list and it is highly recommended to consult your doctor, in case of symptom’s persistence.

 

What is the therapy for skin discoloration?

The best remedy for skin discoloration depends on its cause. In some cases it may be useful to use creams or depigmentation based molecules such as: glycolic acid, ascorbic acid or azelaic acid. On the other hand, infections require more specific treatments and targeted grubbing microbe.

Autoimmune problems also need a specific treatment, for example based on steroids.

In some cases, the dermatologist may recommend chemical peeling treatments or even a laser treatment or dermabrasion.

Remember that prevention is an important tool. Stains can be associated with excessive sun exposure, so the use of an appropriate sunscreen helps reduce the appearance.
