What is Silodosin?
Silodosin works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder. In this way, it helps improve urine flow and reduce symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy.
How should Silodosin be taken?
Silodosin is administered orally in the form of capsules. It should be taken with meals.
Side effects associated with Silodosin
In rare cases, silodosin can cause prolonged or painful erections.
Among the other possible side effects of Silodosin include the following:
- Dizziness
- Sexual problems
You should contact a doctor immediately if you experience:
- Rash
- Urticaria
- Itch
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Tightness in the chest
- Swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue
- Dark urine
- Fainting
- Prolonged and painful erection
- Severe or persistent dizziness
- Bruises
- Jaundice
Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Silodosin
Silodosin can impair the ability to drive or operate hazardous machinery, especially when it is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. In addition, it can cause dizziness and fainting when standing up too quickly. These side effects can be further aggravated by alcohol, hot weather, exercise and fever.
Silodosin should not be taken in case of severe kidney or liver problems. It is also advisable to avoid its intake if you are being treatment with another alpha blocker, ketoconazole, boceprevir, clarithromycin, cobicistat, cyclosporine, itraconazole, nefazodone, posaconazole, ritonavir, telaprevir, or telithromycin.
Before starting treatment with Silodosin, it is also important to tell your doctor if:
- You have any allergies to the active substance, its excipients or any other drugs or food
- You are taking any other medications, herbal remedies or supplements. Mentioning in particular: alpha blockers, phosphodiesterase inhibitors, high blood pressure medications, azole antifungals, clarithromycin, cobicistat, cyclosporine, diltiazem, erythromycin, nefazodone, probenecid, protease inhibitors, telithromycin, valproic acid or verapamil
- You are suffering (or have suffered) from kidney or liver problems, prostate cancer or blood pressure problems
- You are planning on undergoing eye surgery
- You are pregnant or breast-feeding
It is also important to inform physicians, surgeons and dentists of any ongoing treatment with silodosin.
