Can focal shock waves in some cases be considered the last resort before surgery?
Yes, in tendon pathologies, shock waves may constitute an alternative focal therapy. It is a recommended treatment in cases where other treatments have proved to be ineffective, and even before we propose a possible surgery. On the other hand, for certain diseases of the bone, as in the case of non-union and focal necrosis, shock waves are sometimes the first choice of treatment.
