Sclerodactyly

Sclerodactily is an increase of tension of the skin typically associated with scleroderma. Early in the disorder swelling of the fingers may be caused, which later become fibrotic, until the skin becomes hard and shiny. The situation may worsen and restrict the movements of the fingers and contract due to the tension of the skin.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with sclerodactyly?

The following diseases may be associated with sclerodactyly:

  • Raynaud's phenomenon
  • Scleroderma

What is the therapy sclerodactyly?

In case of sclerodactyly, it is very important to start the therapy in the earliest stages. Among the proposed remedies is phototherapy based on UV-A, that may give variable results. An important role is played by physiotherapy, stretching and heating techniques that can help counter the worsening. Moreover wearing casts especially during the night can be useful to allow the fingers to maintain a good shape during the day. In the case of systemic sclerosis you may instead be required surgical treatment.
