Rectal prolapse

The rectal prolapse is a condition characterized by leakage of a more or less consistent mucosa of the rectum from anal opening.

The disorder, whose exact causes are still unknown, is caused by the relaxation or the failure of the pelvic muscles.

Several signs and symptoms may accompany this condition, which become much more evident and debilitating as the prolapse is consistent: difficulty and pain in the evacuation (which may be also associated with burning, bleeding and mucus), sense of failure emptying after intestinal evacuation, presence of rectal lesions, decreased anal sphincter tone, pain in maintaining the sitting position.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with rectal prolapse?

The following diseases may be associated with rectal prolapse:

  • COPD
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Constipation
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Anal cancer

What is the therapy for rectal prolapse?

The treatments of rectal prolapse, which can be either conservative or surgical, usually depend upon the severity of the same prolapse.
