Ramelteon is mainly used in the treatment of insomnia.
What is Ramelteon?
Ramelteon is a melatonin agonist. It acts directly on the brain receptors, thereby promoting numbness.
How should Ramelteon be taken?
Ramelteon is administered orally in the form of tablets. The intake is recommended 30 minutes before going to sleep and in cases when you can sleep at least 7 to 8 hours. Moreover, the drug should not be taken during or immediately after a high fat meal.
Side effects associated with Ramelteon
Among the possible adverse effects of Ramelteon are included:
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Fatigue
It is important to contact a doctor immediately if taking Ramelteon triggers any of the following symptoms:
- Rash
- Itching
- Swelling of face, eyes, lips, tongue or throat
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Tightness in the chest
- Unusual hoarseness
- Absence or changes in menstrual cycle
- Reduced sex drive
- Hallucinations
- Headache
- Memory problems
- Changes in behavior and psychological problems
- Nausea
- Nightmares
- Leaks from the nipple
- Fertility problems
- Suicidal thoughts
- Vomiting
- Worsening of insomnia
Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Ramelteon
Ramelteon may impair the ability to drive or operate hazardous machinery. This side effect can be aggravated by alcohol or taking other medicines.
Additionally, treatment is contraindicated in case of severe liver problems, severe sleep apnea and when taking fluvoxamine.
Moreover, before starting treatment it is important to tell your doctor if:
- You have any allergies to the active substance, its excipients, other medicines, foods, or any other substance
- You are taking other medications, herbal remedies and supplements, in particular azole antifungals, donezepril, fluvoxamine and rifampicin
- You suffer (or have suffered) from liver, lung, respiratory, psychiatric or psychological problems
- You drink alcohol
- You have a history of alcohol abuse or suicidal thoughts
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
If the treatment does not prove effective within 7-10 days, you should consult a doctor.
