Presence of a breast lump

The term "breast lump" refers to an anatomical formation physiological or pathological generally round, circumscribed and palpable, of hard-elastic. From the histological point of view the lump is formed by cellular elements with a structure different from that of the surrounding tissue. The teams may have pathological inflammatory, infectious or tumor.

The tumor nodules may occur in almost any organ in the human body, but most commonly develop in the tissue of the breast, lung, uterus and thyroid. The presence of a breast nodule may be indicative of a tumor disease (benign or malignant) which affects the breast. Very often the mammary nodules are palpable and in some are visible to the naked eye.

The presence of a breast nodule may be accompanied by other signs (changes in the nipple, losses by a nipple, breast skin look orange peel localized changes in the shape of the breast, feeling of tightness in the breast). It may also cause pain.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with breast lump?

The following diseases may be associated with presence of a breast nodule:

  • Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm)
  • Breast cancer (benign breast)
  • Cyst

What is the therapy for breast lump?

In the presence of a breast lump you the problem should not be underestimated and you should contact your doctor as soon as possible.

To examine the nodule a mammogram or breast ultrasound (for young woman between 30 and 45) is usually used. Most of the time some cells of the nodule are aspirated by means of a special needle and subjected to histological examination to clarify whether they are benign or malignant origin.
