Pitting nail

Pitting nail is an alteration of the outer surface of the nail (nail plate) characterized by the formation of small punctiform depressions in the most superficial part of the foil which give the nail a described aspect as a "thimble dressmaker." The condition is caused by an alteration in the process of keratinization of the matrix unguale (the set of cells that continuous production facilities corneas of the nail).

The nail pitting is found in various skin diseases including psoriasis, alopecia areata, eczema and lichen planus.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with nail pitting?

The following diseases may be associated with nail pitting:

  • Alopecia areata
  • Dermatitis
  • Eczema
  • Lichen planus
  • Psoriasis

What is the therapy for pitting nail?

Since the medical conditions that are associated with the presence of pitting nail are different, to identify a suitable treatment to the condition it is fundamental flush out the base disease that underlies it, and act on this. You should avoid "do it yourself" remedies because they could exacerbate the problem.
