Pirenzepine

Pirenzepine is used as an antacid to treat gastrointestinal ulcers. It is also used to control hyper salivation which may be associated with taking antipsychotics such as clozapine.

 

What is Pirenzepine?

Pirenzepine inhibits the secretion of gastric acids interacting with specific receptors. It exerts a gastroprotective action that promotes healing of ulcers and prevents their reappearance. Pirenzepine also increases the effect of other anti-ulcer molecules.

 

How should Pirenzepine be taken?

Pirenzepine is administered orally in the form of tablets. It should be taken on an empty stomach, half an hour before a meal. 

 

Side effects associated with Pirenzepine

Among the possible side effects of Pirenzepine include the following:

 

  • Dry mouth
  • Tainted vision
  • Bad breath
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling faint or lightheaded
  • Changes in appetite
  • Bloating, constipation or diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Sweating

 

It is important to contact a doctor immediately if you experience:

 

  • Rash
  • Urticaria
  • Itch
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Tightness in chest
  • Swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue
  • Vision problems
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Confusion
  • Disorientation

 

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Pirenzepine

Pirenzepine can reduce the ability to drive or operate hazardous machinery. Its intake should not be associated with that of alcohol.

 

Before starting treatment with Pirenzepine, it is important to tell your doctor if:

 

  • You have any allergies to the active substance, its excipients or any other drugs or food
  • You are taking any other medications, herbal remedies or supplements
  • You are suffering (or have suffered) from prostate problems, glaucoma, cardiovascular disease, kidney problems, gastrointestinal problems or urinary difficulties
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding
