Paromomycin

Paromomycin is used for the treatment of intestinal infections caused by amoebae. It can be also taken in combinations with other drugs, for hepatic coma management.

What is Paromomycin?

Paromomycin is an antibiotic that kills susceptible micro-organisms and prevent protein synthesis.

How should Paromomycin be taken?

Paromomycin is administered orally in the form of capsules.

Side effects associated with Paromomycin

Prolonged intake of Paromomycin increases the risk from additional infections.

Among the other possible adverse effects are included:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramps

You should immediately contact a doctor if taking Paromomycin triggers any of the following symptoms:

  • Rash
  • Urticaria
  • Itchy skin
  • Difficult breathing
  • Chest tightness
  • Swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Paromomycin

Paromomycin should not be taken in case of intestinal blockage.

Moreover, before starting the treatment it is important to tell your doctor if:

  • You have any allergies to the active substance, its substances, other medicines or any food
  • You are taking other medications, herbal remedies and supplements, particularly digoxin
  • You suffer (or have suffered) from intestinal problems
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

It is recommended to inform physicians, surgeons and dentists about ongoing treatment with Paromomycin prior to any procedure.
