Ouabain

Ouabain is used for the treatment of certain heart disorders, in particular arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation and heart failure.

 

What is Ouabain?

 

Ouabain acts by increasing the strength of heart muscle contractions; to do so, it increases the levels of sodium and calcium within the cells. Moreover, it also affects the heart's electrical activity.

 

How should Ouabain be taken?

 

In general, Ouabain is administered by injection; in some cases, it may also be prescribed for oral intake.

 

Side effects associated with Ouabain

 

The possible adverse effects of this drug may include:

 

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Irregular pulse
  • Heart block

 

It is important to contact a doctor immediately if taking Ouabain triggers any of the following symptoms:

 

  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Swelling of the face, tongue or throat
  • Difficulty breathing

 

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Ouabain

 

Before treatment with Ouabain it is important to tell your doctor if:

 

  • You have any allergies to the active substance, its excipients, other medicines, foods, or any other substance
  • You are taking other, herbal remedies and supplements, in particular furosemide
  • You suffer (or have suffered) from heart block, problems with the aortic valve, acute myocarditis, cardiomyopathy, pericarditis, or pulmonary heart disease
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
