Muscle cramps

Muscle cramps are sudden involuntary contractions or spasms of one or more muscles. Often they occur after exercise or at night and tend to last for a few seconds or at most a few minutes.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with muscle cramps?

Diseases that may be associated with muscle cramps are the following:

  • Metabolic acidosis
  • Intermittent claudication
  • Kidney failure
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hashimoto
  • Polycythemia vera
  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Varicose veins

Remember that this is not an exhaustive list and it is highly recommended to consult your doctor, in case of symptom’s persistence.

 

What is the therapy for muscle cramps?

If a muscle cramp interrupts your work, you should try to elasticity the muscle by stretching and massaging it. At an early stage it may be useful to heat the affected part, but when the pain decreases a use of an ice pack could be more effective. If the muscle is still sore it may require taking anti-inflammatories. In more serious cases other medications at the discretion of the physician may be given.

The most frequent cause of cramps during exercise is insufficient hydration. Hence, you should also drink water can help relieve the pain. It can also be useful to take supplements of minerals.

In case of muscle cramps you should seek medical attention if the pain is very strong, if the problem recurs and lasts long.
