Mandibular movements (Prognathism)

The condition defines the protrusion of the lower jaw (mandible). At its base there is a problem in the alignment of the teeth due to the shape of the bones of the face that can also lead to malocclusion.

Often the problem is present from birth. A cause it can also be hereditary diseases, such as Crouzon disease or the basal cell nevus syndrome. Other times, mandibular movements can be developed in childhood or adulthood because of conditions such as gigantism or acromegaly.

The following diseases may be associated with prognathism:

  • Acromegaly

Remember that this is not an exhaustive list and it is highly recommended to consult your doctor, in case of symptom’s persistence.

What is the therapy for prognathism?

Misalignment of teeth can be corrected or improved with the help of a dentist or an orthodontist. Sometimes surgery may be indicated.
