Male breast cancer

Q: Good morning. Can breast cancer also affect men? If so, what is the percentage? What are the causes? Thank you in advance.

A: Infiltrating breast carcinoma affects 1% of the male population. Unfortunately, the reason is unknown. Certainly, in the case of gynecomastia (enlargement of a man’s breasts), it is advised to undergo a regular check-up after the age 40. The medical and surgical methods used to treat the cancer are the same as in the case of females. It is important to be aware that having a case of male breast cancer in the family makes it possible for frequent hereditary cases.
