Leukonychia

The leukonychia is a condition characterized by total or partial discoloration of the nail plate (the surface outside of nail) due to bleaching of the nail matrix. Usually it manifests itself with the appearance of irregular whitish spots or stripes in color. There are several causes that can be the basis, among them the most frequent are local trauma (due, for example, to practices of manicure too aggressive), nutritional deficiencies, diseases of the nail and skin diseases.

The presence of irregular whitish spots or stripes may be accompanied by the disintegration of the nail plate.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with leukonychia?

The following diseases may be associated with leukonychia:

  • Alopecia areata
  • Anemia
  • Food shortages
  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Dermatophytosis
  • Eczema
  • Kidney failure
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Onicofagia
  • Onychomycosis
  • Psoriasis
  • Trauma

What is the therapy for leukonychia?

Since the origin of leukonychia may be several causes, it is necessary to know the medical condition that underlies the condition to prepare the remedies that are effective. It is therefore always advisable to consult your doctor, avoiding "do it yourself" remedies.

 

When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of leukonychia?

In case of violent trauma – even local – or in the case of already diagnosed diseases (see list of associated diseases).
