Hemiplegia

Hemiplegia is a condition in which one side of the body is paralyzed. It can be considered as a more severe form of hemiparesis and is caused by a brain damage that originates: before birth (hemiplegia congenital), during birth or after birth. In an adult person it may be a consequence of a stroke.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with hemiplegia?

Diseases that can be associated with hemiplegia are the following:

  • Atherosclerosis
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Stroke
  • Leukodystrophy
  • Cerebral palsy

What is the therapy for hemiplegia?

The objective is to be able to handle the condition and improve the quality of life of those affected. The possible approaches include: physical therapy, inclusion therapy, speech therapy, neuromuscular electrical stimulation and injections of botulinum toxin.

 

When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of hemiplegia?

Hemiplegia must always be approached with the help of a doctor. In case of sudden onset of symptoms, such as: difficulty walking, swallowing, maintaining balance, blurred vision, numbness of one side of the body and urinary or fecal incontinence, it is best to turn to the emergency room.
