Halofantrine

Halofantrine is used to treat severe forms of malaria caused by forms of Plasmodium falciparum multi-resistant to drugs.

 

What is Halofantrine?

 

Halofantrine acts by poisoning the parasite that causes malaria leading to the production of toxic compounds that damage its membrane.

 

How should Halofantrine be taken?

 

The Halofantrine is commercially available for oral use, preferably on an empty stomach. The ideal dosage varies from patient to patient.

 

Side effects associated with Halofantrine

 

The potential adverse effects that may result from Halofantrine may include:

 

  • Cough
  • Gasps
  • Breathing problems
  • Loss of appetite
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Digestive problems
  • Rash
  • Itching

 

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Halofantrine

 

Prior to beginning treatment with Halofantrine it is recommended to inform your doctor if:

 

  • You have any allergies to the active substance, its excipients or any other drug;
  • You are taking other medications, herbal remedies and supplements, in particular artemether, bicalutamide, clotrimazole, conivaptan, lumefantrine, mefloquine, mesoridazine, posaconazole, quinupristin, tacrolimus, telithromycin, thioridazine, toremifene, trimipramine, verapamil, voriconazole, vorinostat, ziprasidone, and zuclopenthixol;
  • You are suffering (or you have suffered) of particular diseases;
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
