Fosfomycin

Fosfomycin interferes with the production of bacterial cell wall by inhibiting irreversible enzyme necessary for the synthesis of one of its fundamental constituents.

What is Fosfomycin?

Fosfomycin is used to treat infections of the urinary tract.  It is particularly indicated in cases of acute cystitis that often affects women and infections with Escherichia coli or Enterococcus faecalis.

How should Fosfomycin be taken?

Fosfomycin is assumed orally, in the form of granules to dissolve in water.

Side effects associated with Fosfomycin

Possible adverse effects of Fosfomycin include:

  • nausea
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • vaginal itching
  • running nose
  • back ache

You should immediately contact a doctor if you experience:

  • temperature
  • skin rash
  • joint pain
  • swelling of the mouth
  • swelling of the tongue
  • jaundice

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Fosfomycin

Before taking Fosfomycin, it is important to inform your doctor:

  • If you have any allergy to the active substance or any other drug
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products, herbal remedies or supplements. Mentioning in particular: cisapride, metoclopramide and vitamins
  • If you suffer (or have suffered) from asthma or liver disease
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
