Exophthalmos (Proptosis)

Exophthalmos is a condition in which the ocular bulb protrudes from the orbit. There may be several conditions that can be regarded as underlying and lead to the volume increase of the content of the orbit itself.

What kind of diseases can be associated with exophthalmos?

Diseases that may be associated with exophthalmos are the following:

  • Arteriovenous aneurysm
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Basedow
  • Tumors

Remember that this is not an exhaustive list and it is highly recommended to consult your doctor, in case of symptom’s persistence.

 

What is the therapy for exophthalmos?

The best treatment depends on the underlying cause of exophthalmos. Sometimes the problem can be reduced by an appropriate treatment against hyperthyroidism or you may need an intervention surgery. In some cases your doctor may prescribe taking corticosteroids.
