Erythrocytosis (Polycythemia)

Erythrocytosis is an increase of red blood cells in the blood. It can be relative, when is attributable to a reduction of the volume of the associated plasma, for example in burns or severe dehydration, or absolute when it is due to an actual increase in the number of blood red cells.

 What kind of diseases can be associated with erythrocytosis?

Diseases that can be associated with the presence of erythrocytosis are the following:

  • Contact allergy
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Hemangioma cerebellar
  • Chronic lung disease
  • Polycythemia vera
  • Liver cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Burns

Remember that this is not an exhaustive list and it is highly recommended to consult your doctor, in case of symptom’s persistence.

 

What is the therapy for erythrocytosis?

To counteract the increase in viscosity of the blood, transfusions may be required, but If the patient has hematocrit greater than 55%, they may need bloodletting. The most appropriate remedy depends on the underlying cause.
