Eructation (Belching)

Belching is the expulsion of excess air present in the stomach through the mouth. It is a natural reflex of air ingestion while eating, drinking or smoking. In some cases, however, it can be associated with disorders such as: gastroesophageal reflux, gastritis and helicobacter pylori infection.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with belching?

Diseases that may be associated with belching are the following:

  • Hiatal hernia
  • Gastritis
  • Indigestion
  • Helicobacter pylori infection
  • Gastroesophageal reflux
  • Stomach cancer
  • Gastric ulcer
  • Peptic ulcer

What is the therapy for belching?

In case of belching it can be useful to eat and drink slowly, avoid carbonated beverages, beer, chewing gum and hard candies, smoking. It will also help if ones dentures are brought at a specialist and check whether whether they are well adapted to the gums.

 

When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of belching?

A doctor should be consulted in cases when the belching becomes a chronic problem. If it is associated with symptoms such as: diarrhea, severe abdominal pain or constant blood in the stool, change in the color of stool, stool frequency, justifiable weight loss or chest pain.
