Eprosartan

Eprosartan is indicated for the treatment of hypertension.

What is Eprosartan?

Eprosartan is an antihypertensive drug that blocks angiotensin II receptors. By inhibiting the action of this type of angiotensin it also blocks the relation with the tissue receptors called AT1 and AT2, determining a series of mechanisms (vasodilation, regulation of arterial muscles), which lead to the adjustment of the blood pressure.

How should Eprosartan be taken?

Eprosartan is commercially available for oral use in the form of tablets or via injection.

Side effects associated with Eprosartan

There are several, recognized adverse effects that may depend on the application of Eprosartan:

  • Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea;
  • Dermatological disorders: rash, itching;
  • Abnormal blood levels: anemia;
  • Systemic disorders: headache, dizziness, asthenia, and hypotension;
  • Cardiovascular disorders: palpitations, tachycardia, vasculitis (rare);
  • Metabolic disorders: hyperuricemia, hypoglycemia, hypercalcemia, and hyponatremia;

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Eprosartan

In case of pregnancy the treatment with Eprosartan should be stopped and, if necessary, alternative therapy should be started.

Since the administration of this drug may result in the increase of blood levels of calcium (hypercalcemia), during treatment it is recommended to monitor the amount of potassium in the body.
