Elevated transaminase levels

Q: Good morning. I have elevated liver transaminase levels. Can it be cured or at least contained? Thank you.

A: Elevated transaminase levels may be a generic sign of liver distress. First, you need to figure out the exact cause of your condition. It could be due to hepatitis viruses such as hepatitis B or hepatitis C, an autoimmune problem (autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis), a genetic problem (hemochromatosis, Wilson's disease), or an exaggerated intake of alcohol or the accumulation of fat in the liver (steatosis). For each of these causes, there is no specific therapy.
