Dobutamine

Dobutamine is mainly used to treat heart failure caused by surgery or a heart disease.

 

What is Dobutamine?

Dobutamine works by increasing the heartbeat’s strength and intensity, thus promoting increased circulation of blood.

 

How should Dobutamine be taken?

Dobutamine is administered via injections.

 

Side effects associated with Dobutamine

Among the possible side effects of dobutamine include the following:

 

  • Headache
  • Nausea

 

It is important to contact a doctor right away if you experience:

 

  • Rash
  • Hives
  • Itching
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue
  • Chest pain
  • Fainting
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling faint or dizzy
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Strange feeling of receiving blows to the chest
  • Shortness of breath

 

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Dobutamine

Dobutamine should not be taken in case of heart valve problems, adrenal tumors, tachyarrhythmias or idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis.

 

Before treatment with dobutamine, it is important to tell your doctor if:

 

  • You have any allergies to the active substance, to its components, sulfites or any other drugs or food
  • You are taking any other medications, herbal remedies or supplements. Mentioning in particular:  cimetidine, methyldopa, catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitors and droxidopa
  • You are suffering (or have suffered) from irregular heartbeat, hypervolemia, diabetes or high blood pressure
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

 

Finally, it is important to inform surgeons and dentists of any ongoing treatment with dobutamine.
