Compactina

Compactina is an experimental drug that can reduce cholesterol level, but it is not actively used in a therapeutic context because of its many adverse effects.

What is Compactina?

 

Compactina, also known as Mevastatin, is an isolated from of fungus Penicillium citinium. It is an agent able to reduce cholesterol level, by inhibiting the HMG-CoA reductase (hydroxymethyl-CoA) enzyme.

Furthermore, it is a prodrug that must be activated in the body with beggar hydrolysis.

How should Compactina be taken?

Typically, Compactina is very rarely administered because of its many adverse effects.

Side effects associated with Compactina

Among the possible adverse effects are included:

  • Myalgia
  • Abdominal pains
  • Nausea

Compared with other statins, it is associated with a greater risk of myotoxicity (myopathy, myositis, rhabdomyolysis) and hepatotoxicity.

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Compactina

Moreover, before starting the treatment it is important to tell your doctor if:

  • You have any allergies to medications, food or any other substance
  • You are taking other medications, herbal remedies and supplements
  • You suffer (or have suffered) from some diseases or have health problems
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
