Burning Retrosternal

Heartburn is a symptom that manifests itself as a burning sensation in the sternum, the bone in the anterior chest wall located between the collarbone and the first seven pairs of ribs (hence the name of the disorder "heartburn"). The burning sensation that characterizes the disorder is often associated with the gastric reflux and can cause burning sensation in the stomach (unlike the mucosa of the stomach, the mucosa of the esophagus is not able to tolerate the acidity of the gastric juices). There are many symptoms that accompany the heartburn: persistent dry cough, wheezing, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, difficulty or pain when swallowing, etc.

What kind of diseases can be associated with heartburn?

The following diseases can be associated with heartburn:

Remember that this is not an exhaustive list and it is highly recommended to consult your doctor, in case of symptom’s persistence.

What is the therapy for heartburn?

Since the contact of gastric juices with the lining of the esophagus is the main origin cause of the symptom, pharmacological remedies based on anti-acidic medicines are most commonly used. However, so that this medical issue is solved, it is necessary for the primary disease to be treated.

When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of heartburn?

If the disorder does not subside within a few days or in the presence of associated diseases (see list of associated diseases).
