Buphthalmos

Buphthalmos is an enlargement of the eyeball due to accumulation of fluid in the eye. The accumulation prevents the proper development of the eye. It can be presented at birth or appear in the early childhood.

In most cases the buphthalmos affects both eyes, but the effect can be different on both eyeballs. The problem may be also associated with other congenital anomalies in other parts of the body.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with buphthalmos?

The following diseases can be associated with buphthalmos:

  • Glaucoma
  • Retinoblastoma

What is the therapy for buphthalmos?

Buphthalmos can be treated surgically. The possible approaches include goniotomy and trabeculectomy.

 

When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of buphthalmos?

An ophthalmologist should be consulted in case of present symptoms of buphthalmos. In fact if the symptoms are not treated in a timely manner the condition can lead to blindness.
