Bone pain

Bone pain is a severe discomfort that can be distinguished from the muscles or joints discomfort because it is felt both during physical activity and during rest. Typically it is associated with diseases or events (such as trauma) that impair the normal functioning of the bones or their structure.

What kind of diseases can be associated with bone pain?

The following diseases may be associated with bone pain:

  • Prostate cancer
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Leukemia
  • Cat-scratch disease
  • Bone metastases
  • Paget's disease
  • Syphilis
  • Bone cancer

Remember that this is not an exhaustive list and it is highly recommended to consult your doctor, in case of symptom’s persistence.

What is the therapy for bone pain?

The best therapy to treat bone pain can be determined only after discovering the underlying cause. Taking painkillers can indeed alleviate the discomfort, but does not eliminate the reasons triggering the condition.

In some cases it may be necessary to take antibiotics, while other times it is essential to undergo a surgery. In the case of present tumours a radiotherapy or chemotherapy may be required. Those patients suffering from osteoporosis can benefit from taking supplements of calcium and vitamin D.

When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of bone pain?

Often there are serious conditions as a root cause of bone pain that require intervention of an expert. Hence, if the discomfort is not relieved in a few days or the bone pain is associated with weight loss, decreased appetite, or a general sense of fatigue, a doctor should be consulted.

If the bone pain is associated with trauma, a doctor or a visit to the ER should be made.
