Ataxia

Ataxia is a condition that compromises the control of muscles during voluntary movements such as walking or grasping objects. It can also affect the process of speaking, swallowing and eye movement and usually occurs as a result of damage to the cerebellum, the brain structure responsible for the coordination of the muscles.

What is the therapy for ataxia?

There is no specific treatment for ataxia. The therapy depends on the underlying cause that triggered the condition. In some cases it may be useful to use walking supports (such as walkers or canes). On other times, physiotherapy, speech therapy or particular treatment may be beneficial.

 

When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of ataxia?

If the patient is diagnosed with conditions that cause ataxia, such as multiple sclerosis. A doctor should be also contacted in case of decreased: balance, ability to coordinate movements of the hands, arms or legs and noticed difficulties with walking, talking or swallowing.
