Akinesia

Akinesia (abnormal movement) is a disorder that is manifested by impairment or loss of the ability to perform voluntary movements, characterized by spontaneous motor activities. The condition affects gesticulatory activity, accompanying speech, facial expression and fluctuations of the upper limbs while walking.

The word derives from the Greek language and is made from the Greek prefix "a", which indicates the lack of something “without”, and “kinesis” which means "movement". Thus, indicating a condition in which the person who gets it is "without movement", that is, cannot move or have severe difficulties in doing so.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with akinesia?

The following diseases may be associated with akinesia:

  • Parkinson's disease
  • Catatonic schizophrenia
