Akathisia (Restless Leg Syndrome)

Akathisia is a state of restlessness in which the subject is forced to move constantly owing to the sever muscle stiffness. The affected person who suffers from this condition is unable to remain in the same position for a long time.

Akathisia makes the legs’ movement particularly impelling. If sitting, the subject continuously crosses and dangles their legs. However, if standing, they tend to run in place or walk back and forth in short paces.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with akathisia?

The following diseases may be associated with akathisia:

  • Dementia
  • Hysterical disorders
  • Parkinson's disease and other diseases of the extrapyramidal system
  • Restless legs syndrome

The treatment for akathisia is an intake of particular type of drug.
