Trout

What is trout?

Trout is a fish belonging to the family Salmonidae. There are several species, some marine, others in lakes and rivers. In Italy, the variety of fresh water are more widespread.

 

What are the nutritional properties of the trout?

100g of trout provide about 86 calories broken down as follows:

  • 69% protein
  • 31% lipids

 

In particular, 100g of trout (Salmo trutta) contain approximately:

  • 80.5 g water
  • 14.7 g protein
  • 3 g of lipids, between which 0.7g saturated fatty acids, 0.77 g of monounsaturated fatty acids, 1.17 g of polyunsaturated fatty acids (in particular alpha-linolenic acid – an omega 6 – and EPA – an omega 3) and 55 mg of cholesterol
  • 3 mg niacin
  • 0.08 mg thiamine
  • 0.06 mg of riboflavin
  • traces of vitamin a
  • trace of vitamin C
  • 465 mg of potassium
  • 220 mg of phosphorus
  • 40 mg sodium
  • 25 mg magnesium

When should you not eat trout?

There are some known interactions between consumption of trout and the intake of drugs or other substances. If in doubt it is good to seek advice from your doctor.

 

Availability of trout

Trout fishing season differs for different regions of Italy. However, being a farmed fish, it is available virtually all year round on the market.

 

Possible benefits and contraindications of trout

Trout is a food not overly calorie rich in high biological value protein, minerals and vitamins. Among the most abundant micronutrients there is potassium, that controls the heart rate and blood pressure, which helps protect cardiovascular health, and phosphorus, especially healthy for bones and teeth, but also the kidneys, muscles and the heart, the metabolism and nerve impulse transmission.

Furthermore, the high levels of calcium is valuable for bone health, and the iron is involved in the production of red blood cells. Among the vitamins contained in trout , the ones that stand out are those of the B group, important for a well functioning metabolism. Among the lipids, omega-3s are allies of cardiovascular health.

The consumption of trout can be associated with allergic reactions.
