Dry eyes

The condition called dry eye is caused by inadequate watering. The consequences may be burning, itching, stinging, eye fatigue after reading, and discomfort during the use of contact lenses and formation of small abrasions on the surface of the eye. Causes can also be from sun exposure or too dry environment, taking medications for colds or allergies, smoking (including passive smoking), interventions surgical trauma to the eyes or problems with contact lenses, Sjögren's syndrome or, simply, aging.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with dry eye?

The following diseases may be associated with dry eyes:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Blepharitis
  • Primary biliary cirrhosis
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Scleroderma
  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Sjögren's syndrome

Remember that this is not an exhaustive list and it is highly recommended to consult your doctor, in case of symptom’s persistence.

 

What is the therapy for dry eyes?

Good remedy for dry eyes is so-called artificial tears, available also like ointments drops. It is also advised not to smoke, keep the environment properly humidified (especially during winter), and keep your eyes clean, try to rest as much as possible also try to blink more often. Also you should seek advice from your doctor and consult about the possibility to stop taking drugs that could have triggered the problem.

 

When is most likely to contact your doctor in case of dry eyes?

In case of dry eye, it is good to seek medical attention. If the problem is not resolved in a few days, if the eyes are red and sore or if the disorder is associated with loss of material from the eyelids, trauma, pain, swelling or stiffness joints or dry mouth you should seek medical attention..
