The Department of Traumatology is part of the Major Trauma Network of the Lombardy Region. It runs the emergency room trauma section and is able to perform treatment of fractures within the first 6 hours of the patient’s ER admission, using modern fixation techniques that guarantee a reduction in the post-operative recovery time. The team is highly specialized in high-energy fractures, multiple trauma cases, pelvic ring and acetabular fractures, as well as in such trauma complications as pseudarthrosis, malunion, and infections.
The Traumatology team performs on average 1,000 surgeries each year. The surgeons follow quality guidelines introduced by the International Association of Osteosynthesis. For instance, the team opts for minimally invasive approaches for most surgeries, not affecting soft tissue or bone vascularity, thus enabling early mobilization. Thanks to the modern surgical approaches, patients are able to leave the hospital sooner to return to ordinary daily activities.
What is more, the Department is a reference center for complications of fractures, in particular delays in bone healing and pseudarthrosis. For treatment and prevention of pseudarthrosis, the specialists employ such modern techniques as RIA (reaming irrigation aspiration), the antibiotic nail (protect), and locking screws with angular stability (ASLS).
