The Department, performs diagnostics for over 12,500 patients each year. The Nuclear medicine team uses unsealed sources of ionizing radiation for diagnosis and treatment of many conditions. The Department is able to perform all major scintigraphic investigations in the field of Oncology, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Endocrinology, Neurology, Nephro-urology, Gastroenterology and Pulmonology.
Moreover, thanks to the PET-cyclotron unit, the team conducts PET (positron emission tomography) investigations in Oncology, Neurology and Cardiology. Nuclear Medicine Unit in Humanitas is equipped not only with 2 PET-CTs, but also with the cyclotron for own production of 7 kinds of radiopharmaceutical allowing precise diagnosis both of “big killers” and rare and difficult to identify tumors (neuroendocrine tumors, leiomyosarcomas, pleural mesotheliomas and soft tissue sarcomas).
What is more, the Department performs outpatient treatment with radioiodine for benign conditions of the thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism and goiter). Additionally, the team employs special ward rooms that allow to administer high doses of radiopharmaceuticals for the treatment of thyroid cancer, neuroendocrine tumors and bone pain.
