The Department of Ophthalmology, headed by Pr. Paolo Vinciguerra, offers diagnostics, treatment, and surgical procedures for various conditions affecting the eyes and visual perception, seeing over 20,000 patients annually.
The Humanitas Eye Center performs cataract surgery using the ultrasound phacoemulsification technique and artificial lens implantation, glaucoma and also congenital-infantile and paralytic strabismus, after functional assessment by the pediatric ophthalmology and orthoptic service, deals with retinal pathologies (detachments, vitrectomies), corneal transplants, stem cells, amniotic membrane, as well as refractive surgery with femtosecond and excimer lasers for the laser correction of myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia, and presbyopia.
The team employs such diagnostic techniques as retinal fluorescein angiography, visual computerized campimetry, corneal topography, and visual evoked potentials.
The Department carries out interventions for cataracts with the phacoemulsification ultrasound technique and implantation of artificial lens for glaucoma and congenital strabismus – both childhood and paralytic strabismus.
Pr. Vinciguerra and his team also treat retinal diseases (retinal detachment, vitrectomy) and performs corneal and amniotic membrane transplantations, stem cell therapy, as well as refractive laser eye surgery for the correction of myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia, and presbyopia.
What is more, the Department offers tear duct surgery, eyelid surgery, and orbital surgery, as well as outpatient laser treatments to treat glaucoma, retinal diseases, and secondary cataract.
