Erythromelalgia (Mitchell’s disease)

Erythromelalgia can be considered a pathological condition or a secondary symptom of another disease, usually related to: defects of coagulation, diabetes, gout and multiple sclerosis. The symptom is manifested by intense burning, described as burning pain, heat and redness localized on the hands, feet, face, ears and knees. It is an abnormal vasodilation of the peripheral blood vessels.

 

What kind of diseases can be associated with erythromelalgia?

Diseases that can be associated with erythromelalgia are the following:

 

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Gout
  • Hypertension
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Polycythemia vera
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Thrombocythemia
  • Varicose veins

What is the therapy for erythromelalgia?

In case of pain, it is advisable to cool the part with ice, dipping into cold water or with fan aid.
