Dr. Fabia Filipello and Dr. Raffaella Morini, researchers at Humanitas, received the Fondazione Veronesi Award at the Grant Awards ceremony for the research grants awarded by the foundation founded in 2003 at the behest of Umberto Veronesi. The award, now in its second edition, rewards the best research published during 2018.
The winning works and research were chosen by a scientific committee: the studies were selected on the base of the impact factor of the scientific journal in which they were published and of the translational potential of the research.
The work of Dr. Filippello and Dr. Morini
Dr. Morini Dr. Filipello, supported by the Umberto Veronesi Foundation (in 2013-2014 and 2018 respectively) have continued their research at Humanitas.
Their work, for which they are first co-authors on an equal footing entitled “The microglial innate immune receptor TREM2 is required for synapse elimination and normal brain connectivity”, has been published in the scientific journal Immunity.
The study revealed the importance of the TREM2 microglial receptor during the development of the brain, a discovery that could open up new scenarios in the understanding of the mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental diseases, such as autism spectrum disorders.
