Irritable Bowel During Spring: Three tips to Fight it off

With the warmer weather, some patients lament abdominal ailments and pains. Doctor Federica Furfaro, gastroenterologist in the Center for Chronic Inflammatory Intestinal Diseases, spoke about “Irritable Bowel during Spring”, in the Radio24’s radio broadcast “Cuore e Denari” (“Heart and Money”, NDT).

“The typical spring colitis is the one we commonly call “Irritable Bowel Syndrome” and the change of season seems to be a possible cause of exacerbation.
Those who suffer from it lament abdominal pains, constipation or diarrhea (often alternating), cramps, bloating, and mucus in stools”.

Three tips to fight it off

“It is fundamental to drink at least two liters of water per day, plain if possible and even better, without a meal, because gases intensify the bloating and the meteorism.

You should also engage in constant physical exercise, that is also beneficial for your intestinal health.

Regarding food, you should eat fibers, especially fruit and vegetables. These are good both cooked and raw, but those who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome should not eat these foods in large quantities, because they lead to an excessive gas production. For example, legumes (but you can eat skinned ones), cauliflowers, mushrooms, leeks and broccoli, can cause abdominal bloating.
You should also limit the consumption of dried fruit and avoid eating fruit right after meals, because they are really sugary and ferment a lot, causing ailments and pains”, Doctor Furfaro explains.
