Irritable bowel in spring: three tips for combating it

With the arrival of the summer season, some patients complain of abdominal pain and annoyance, as reported by Dr. Federica Furfaro, gastroenterologist of the Centre for Inflammatory Chronic Diseases of the Intestine in Humanitas, guest at Cuore and Denari on Radio24.

The colitis typical of the spring season is what we most commonly refer to as irritable bowel syndrome and the change in season would seem to be a possible cause of exacerbation.

Patients report symptoms such as abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhea (which often occur alternately), cramps, swelling and mucus in feces.

Three tips against irritable bowel

It is essential to drink at least two liters of water a day, natural water if possible because gas water increases the feeling of swelling and meteorism. Moreover, it is better to drink it separately from meals.

It is recommended to devote oneself to a constant physical activity, which is also beneficial for the intestinal health.

As far as nutrition is concerned, it is important to consume fibers, especially from fruit and vegetables. These products can be consumed both cooked and raw, but those who suffer from irritable bowel should avoid exceeding in the consumption of those foods that lead to greater production of gas. These include legumes (which may be preferable if peeled), cauliflowers, mushrooms, leeks and broccoli, which can cause swelling of the abdominal tissue. The consumption of dried fruit should also be limited and it is advisable to avoid eating fruit immediately after meals, as it is very sugary and ferments more and confers disorders and annoyances,” explains Dr. Furfaro.
