Abdominal Bloating

Causes of a Bloated Belly

Abdominal bloating is a common symptom, especially among women. It can be unsightly annoying and can also indicate several underlying disorders.

What is Abdominal Bloating, and What Causes It?

Abdominal bloating is caused by an accumulation of gas in the stomach and intestines and can be attributed to many factors.

In men, it is primarily due to an improper diet, stress factors, dysbiosis, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.

In women, it may be due to several causes, including:

  • Improper chewing, which is common in those who eat too quickly.
  • Poor nutrition (simple, lightly seasoned dishes are recommended).
  • Inadequate water intake; we should drink a glass of natural water at room temperature every hour.
  • Certain food intolerances.
  • Medications, especially antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and gastroprotectants.
  • Menstrual cycle.

Chronic Illnesses and Abdominal Bloating

If a bloated belly is accompanied by other symptoms, such as sudden weight loss or blood in the stool, it is advisable to visit a gastroenterologist. The doctor will conduct clinical and diagnostic examinations to rule out possible intolerances or more severe problems.

Abdominal Bloating: What Are the Issues?

After ruling out organic pathologies, several causes may lead to abdominal bloating, such as lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, or intestinal dysbiosis (SIBO).

If intestinal bloating is associated with blood loss in the stool or weight loss, it should be carefully evaluated. In such cases, a colonoscopy is recommended.

What Does a Gastroenterological Examination Consist Of?

During a gastroenterological examination, the patient discusses symptoms with a gastroenterologist, who will then diagnose and treat, if necessary, based on the symptoms reported. The doctor will decide whether to continue the course with other diagnostic tests.
