Roflumilast

Roflumilast is used to reduce the risk of exacerbations or worsening of respiratory problems in some cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

 

What is Roflumilast?

 

The exact mechanism of action of Roflumilast is not fully understood. However, it is known that it inhibits the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 4.

 

How should Roflumilast be taken?

 

Roflumilast is administered orally, in the form of tablets.

 

Side effects associated with Roflumilast

 

Roflumilast can cause severe and sudden breathing problems. It can also increase the risk of psychological or behavioral problems and lead to weight gain.

 

Among the other possible side effects are included:

 

  • Back ache
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Headache
  • Mild weight loss
  • Nausea

 

It is important to contact a doctor immediately if taking Roflumilast triggers any of the following symptoms:

 

  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Swelling of face, eyes, lips, tongue or throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Problems with urination
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Psychological or behavioral problems
  • Stomach pain or strong or persistent back pain
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Tremors
  • Insomnia

 

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Roflumilast

Roflumilast is contraindicated in the presence of certain liver problems and if you are taking carbamazepine, hydantoins, phenobarbital, primidone, or rifamycins hypericum.

 

Roflumilast can compromise the ability to drive or operate hazardous machinery; this effect can be aggravated by alcohol and certain drugs.

 

Moreover, before starting treatment it is important to tell your doctor if:

 

  • You have any allergies to the active substance, its excipients, other medicines, foods, or any other substance
  • You are taking other medications, herbal remedies and supplements, particularly hormonal contraceptives, cimetidine, enoxacin, erythromycin, fluvoxamine, itraconazole, ketoconazole, carbamazepine, hydantoins, phenobarbital, primidone, or rifamycins hypericum
  • You suffer (or have suffered) from liver, mental or psychological problems
  • You have suicidal thoughts
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
