Ambroxol

Ambroxol is used to treat a cough associated with mucus secretion or in case of excessive coughing.

What is Ambroxol?

Ambroxol is considered an antitussive or a drug that can relieve the symptoms of a cough. In fact, it acts as a mucous regulator. Ambroxol induces a watery secretion by targeting the secretory glands and vagus nerve stimulation. This in turn increases hydration of the mucus, resulting in easing of its elimination. It also stimulates airway ciliary motility, which further eases the elimination of mucus.

How should Ambroxol be taken?

Ambroxol is administered through inhalation or orally in the form of syrup.

Side effects associated with Ambroxol

The use of Ambroxol is generally well toleration. In the event of prolonged exposure to the drug in sensitive individuals, side effects may present themselves. These side effects include the following:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dry mouth
  • Allergic reactions to the active substance (rare)

Contraindications and warnings associated with the use of Ambroxol

Similarly to other mucolytics, Ambroxol can damage the gastric mucosa. Therefore, it is recommended to take the drug on a full stomach and with extreme caution in patients with a medical history of gastric ulcer.

Particular attention should be paid in the administration of this drug in patients with severe liver and kidney disease. Also, the administration of Ambroxol should be avoided in children under the ages of two.
