Cilastatin

Cilastatin is used in a clinical treatment of serious infections in combination with the antibiotic imipenem.

What is Cilastatin?

Cilastatin is administered in formulations combined with imipenem antibiotic, intravenously in a hospital setting.

How should Cilastatin be taken?

Cilastatin is an inhibitor of the drug synthesis of dehydropeptidase I, an enzyme secreted onto the brush border of the renal proximal tubule cells. It is prescribed in a formulation with imipenem antibiotic, to prevent renal metabolism of this drug, promoting the concentrations in the urine.

Side effects associated with Cilastatin

The common recognized side effects from the use of Cilastatin and medicines combined with it, may potentially include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It can also cause allergies. An adjustment of the dosage should be provided for the elderly and for people with kidney disease.
